    Infotainment 020 - Match Me If You Can

    Players match two or three word cards that have the same meaning.

    Objective:
    To help students recognize synonyms and expand their vocabulary

    Players:
    2 to 4 players

    How to Play:
    1. Shuffle the "Match Me if You Can" cards. Deal the cards evenly among the players, placing them facedown in front of each player.

    2. Players turn over two cards at the same time, placing them faceup in front of them.
      The first player to stop two word cards that have the same meaning can take them. If no matches are available, players turn over another two cards and place them next to the other cards. Words that have asterisks (*) are part of a three-of-a-kind set. That means that there are three cards that are synonyms. Aterisked word cards must remain faceup until all three words are found.

    3. Play continues until all cards have been matched. The player with the most cards at the end of the game wins.

    Believe your ears, catch someone's eye, give someone a hand, have your head in the clouds, head over heels (in love), keep an eye on, learn something by heart, make up your mind, put your foot in it.

    Preparation
    Make one copy of the Hidden word puzzle for each student.

    Lead-in
    Explain that an idiom is a group of words which have a particular meaning. Write: It's a piece of cake on the board and ask students if they know what it means. Accept any answer similar to "Is's very easy" and then put students into groups to list as many idioms as they can. After a minute, ask them to call out their ideas and write them on the board. Then ask students to give the meaning of each idiom, and add this in brackets.

    Main activity
    Tell students they are going to complete idioms in a puzzle.

    Follow up
    Put students into groups and tell them to talk about their first love. Write: My first love on the board and add these questions to help them: How old were you? What was their name? Where did you meet? What did they look like? What happened?

    Read the text and try to guess the missing words. Write the missing word in the correct place on the grid to reveal a hidden vertical word.

    My first love was Claire Wardell. We both went to the same primary school. As soon as I saw her in class on the first day, I fell head over 1 __________ in love. That afternoon, after school, she agreed I could walk home with her. On the way she asked me to keep an 2 ______ on her bag while she went into a shop. Well, I was a bit of dreamer in those days. I always had my 3 ________ in the clouds, and well... when she came out, the bag was gone.
    Somebody had stolen it. She was angry and told me she didn't like me any more. I couldn't believe my 4 ________. I was very upset.
